Early 1990’s
The first ever website was posted back in 1991and was purely text based; the website can still be viewed in all its glory at the following link http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.
It was not until over a year later in 1992 that the first ever picture appeared on the internet. The photo was posted by Tim Burners Lee, who coincidentally was also the inventor of the World Wide Web.
Mid 1990’s
By the mid 1990’s pictures were no longer a novelty and were a common sight on most websites as the era of table-based web design was approaching, allowing for more scope with regards to the layout of websites and the better organisation of website content. Then in 1996 came a further game changing development in the field of wed design, with the creation of Adobe Flash player. Thanks to the development of this software purely static WebPages were to become a thing of the past and animations and other interactive features could now be displayed on WebPages.
Early 2000’s
The early 2000’s witnessed the growing popularity of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) which allowed for the formatting and design of web pages separately from their content, making the process of web design much easier for developers. The computer programming language Java was also developed during this period and allowed for the introduction of other notable design features commonly seen on websites today, such as navigation bars and drop down menus which acted to greatly enhance the user experience.
Late 2000’s – Present
The period from the late 2000’s till today has also been a revolutionary one for website design and has ushered in a new era of web design, with interactive and social content having become key design features. Furthermore many websites have begun to move away from utilising websites purely for the purpose of selling their products and website content has become increasingly important. The past few years have also seen the rise of the mobile web which brought a number of new challenges and opportunities for web developers.
