In the second part in our continuing series on website design trends to look out for in the coming year, we take a further look at some website design features that are set to be big in 2015.

Using images has always been a great way to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a website, and websites are becoming more visual than ever before. Large images in particular are becoming popular on homepage designs and website backgrounds, and are set to take centre stage in 2015.

Pictures can often say more than words ever could, and can be easier for users to process. Using a text overlay is also a great way to get your message across, and this is ultimately one of the simplest ways to ensure your site makes an impact.

As most good designers already know, choosing the right font is essential to any website design and can make a big difference. However whilst rich typography was once the preserve of expensive website design, things are changing, and it is now easier and cheaper than ever before to incorporate good typography into website design. Consequently, the days of Times New Roman are fast becoming a thing of the past.

Flat Design

There has also been a trend towards minimalist styles of late, and flat design – which refers to a particular style of interface design that makes use of simple elements such as clean lines, and bright colours – has experienced a significant explosion in popularity. The “flat” in flat design comes from the fact that websites utilising this kind of design rarely introduce features such as texture and dimensionality.

This kind of design lends itself well to the way we absorb content on the web, and also allows for both an attractive and practical aesthetic. As such, 2015 is set to see this design philosophy become more popular than ever.
